A free-to-attend presentation and workshop has been arranged for anyone with an interest to act in or join the production team for next year’s Darwin Festival performance of Inherit the Wind.

Organised by the play’s director Sonia Knight through Shropshire County Drama Group (SCDG) the one off event is to take place at St Chad’s church hall, Shrewsbury on Wednesday 4 August. Sonia Knight, an accomplished actor in her own right, also directed Henry IV (Part One) at Haughmond Abbey in 2003. SCDG’s performances this year have included The Lion in Winter at The Edge Theatre and King Lear at the biennial Much Wenlock Festival.

Set in a Dayton courtroom in the intense heat of a Tennessee summer Inherit the Wind, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee, is a dramatisation of the infamous Scopes ‘Monkey Trial” of 1925 and will run from 23-26 February 2005 at St Chad’s church. A powerful and ultimately uplifting story it is essentially seen as a face-off between Darwinism and Creationists. The real theme, however, explores freedom of thought and man’s natural thirst for knowledge.

Sonia, commenting on the workshop, said: “Starting with an introduction about the project this event is not just intended to attract actors. We welcome people who may wish to take a behind the scenes role. Auditions and a play read through will be held at a later date.”

Doors open at St Chad’s church hall at 7pm and the event starts at 7.30pm on 4 August. For more information or contact Rosalind Garrard at SCDG on 07831 271276 or by email to Businesses interested in sponsoring the Darwin festival should contact Jon King through 01743 246988 or via the website at
