The County of Salop Steam Engine Society’s 2015 Rally, taking place at Onslow Park, Shrewsbury on the August Bank Holiday, – Sunday 30th August and Monday 31st August will be celebrating and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Sentinel factory being established in Shrewsbury.
Edward Goddard, Society Chairman said: “As a born and bred Salopian I am extremely passionate about Sentinel engines, so the Society is planning a special Sentinel Spectacular, where the return of these magnificent steam waggons will be a great delight for people attending the Rally. I would like to ask anyone who has any memories of Sentinel vehicles or the Sentinel factory to please contact the Society Archivist, Michael Llewellyn via email at michael.llewellyn1@btinternet.com
Michael Llewellyn, Society Archivist said: “I would be most interested to see any memorabilia or pictures of Sentinel products, and to hear about the manufacture of Sentinels. I am sure there must be many people who will have fond memories of their family working at the Shrewsbury Sentinel works, and of the steam and diesel products made at the Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury site. Please contact me at michael.llewellyn1@btinternet.com Waggon manufacturing was moved in 1915 to a new factory in Shrewsbury alongside the LNWR mainline to Crewe from the old works in Glasgow. The company produced many steam and diesel-powered engines with production continuing until the late 1950’s. Sentinels are a typical example of the exhibits that we are privileged to see and enjoy at the Shrewsbury Steam Rally, and it is a tribute to the skill and hard work of their owners that we are still able to see and enjoy them still today”.
